In Survivor Times Two: A Poetic Memoir of Suicide and Divorce, Devi Nina Bingham talks about grief and her own experiences. Being a single parent for a long time, her daughter was also her best friend, which made the trauma worse when her teenage daughter committed suicide. The events that follow put a strain on her marriage, which also ends in divorce, causing further trauma. She dissects the stages of grief, which she points out don’t follow as people believe they do, and how bereavement doesn’t affect just one person but also loved ones. It was during the tenth anniversary of her daughter’s death that she wrote the poems used in this poetic memoir. Did she completely heal?

Survivor Times Two: A Poetic Memoir of Suicide and Divorce by Devi Nina Bingham is uniquely written and will capture the attention of readers right away. The poems are an excellent way of showing what people go through and also indicate the importance of writing our feelings down to help process them. The poems also made the book effective in passing on the intended message. I loved the emphasis on borrowing from existing knowledge, and the numerous references provided can be used as a guide for further reading about the various issues discussed. This thought-provoking work also addresses stereotypes about grief and how loved ones can support the one grieving. This is an excellent book, and I look forward to reading something else about mental health issues by this author.

Grievers should read this

Amazing confessional poetry, and help for complex grief.
