Ten Hungry Dragons by Lorna Lovell Stallman is an energetic, rhyming adventure filled with counting, “fiery” characters, and scrumptious treats. The book begins with ten hungry dragons on the hunt for their dinner. One by one, each of them enjoys a tasty snack, like blueberries or apples, until only a single lonely dragon remains. Will he ever be able to find a meal, too? This tale introduces counting backward through rhythmic repetition and fun number sequences. The text invites readers to participate as they count down from ten to one and back again, reinforcing numerical skills while also exploring themes of kindness, patience, and teamwork. This story ends with a surprise twist and important lesson, providing a gentle introduction to early number skills and positive social themes.
I loved how Ten Hungry Dragons by Lorna Lovell Stallman playfully blends simple take-away math with an uplifting social-emotional message. The rhymes are engaging and perfect for reading aloud, and the pacing keeps young listeners eager for the next “ROAR!” Each dragon has a distinct personality, adding humor and variety that keep this read lively from start to finish. The illustrations by Leila Nabih are colorful and lend the narrative an almost whimsical quality. As an educator, I can see this book sparking classroom discussions about sharing, fairness, and friendship, while also reinforcing counting and subtraction skills. After reading, students could practice counting backward, do some simple equations, or create fruit-themed crafts. Dragons and other mystical creatures are always a big hit with kids, whether it’s in the classroom or at home, and this story channels that fascination into a silly, engaging learning experience full of charm.
