The Adventures of Ditsi the Dor-rat and her Friend the Donkaroo: A Children's Guide to Lessons in Life by Lisa Wilson is the heart-warming story of Ditsi who did not like the image that she saw of herself in the mirror. Ditsi felt she looked more like a dor-rat than a dormouse so she went in search of other dor-rats. Along the way, Ditsi befriended Donkaroo, crossed between a donkey and a kangaroo – a unique, one-of-a-kind animal who is always happy about everything. Donkaroo introduced Ditsi to Cat who immediately took to her. Ditsi realized that her new friends like her, so she must be likable. Ditsi learned to trust people and find support, be grateful for what she has, be positive about who she is, and forgive people who hurt her. Ditsi thought about the people who raised and cared for her – parents, siblings, and friends. Ditsi told her family good things about themselves and how much she loved them.
The Adventures of Ditsi the Dor-rat and her Friend the Donkaroo is a fantastic, educational story. Author Lisa Wilson takes children on an adventure of self-discovery with Ditsi. Children will learn about self-identity, emotions, self-image, kindness, friendship, and more. Lisa encourages children to explore their own personal challenges and find solutions for them. Feeling ostracized, lonely, unsupported, or disliked can have an enormous impact on children and adults so it is important to learn coping mechanisms from a young age. It’s also important for children to learn forgiveness, gratitude, and how to give or receive compliments. The adventures of Ditsi are a great way for children to understand that they are not alone and other children have similar challenges to face. All-round, an absolute delight to read, highly recommended for all children – and some adults as well.
