The Apprentice by M.L. Hall is about Artamos De'spada and his trial mission with his mentor Adrian Rizzo and Black Knight Falita Kain. The mission is simple: escorting the king's betrothed safely from the Cromanian border to Caltania.
This book, like any fantasy tale, takes you to the realms of mysticism and surrealism. Of late, I have begun to enjoy books with a fantasy theme, mainly because it is an opportunity for the reader also to break the barriers of his mind and start fantasizing and dreaming. It lets the writer take his imagination to the land of the unexplored and alien. The language is rich and there is much creativity in the way the story is crafted, which makes it an interesting read.
The Apprentice is not all about fantasy: it is also about the adventures of Artamos and his team, and the challenges they face while on their mission. Fantasy books always make you think in a different light. They actually break the monotonous rut of one's thinking because there is so much action, fantasy, mystery, betrayal and romance all skillfully woven together. Each of these elements is here in the right amount. The scenes are crisp and the characters are etched well.
The book has an open ending which hints at a sequel. The conflicts, the trials and tribulations that Artamos faces during his mission open up the opportunity for a lot more stories to follow. One hopes there will be a sequel to this book.
