In The Artist Instance by Faruk Brbovic, during the winters, Anela Foster paints impossible patterns—doorways that threaten reality’s fabric, capturing loops with precision from angles that are hard to attain. She is under the illusion that she is painting a nightmare. Then Elysia Harrington enters her bar, and from the moment she sees Anela's art, she feels something alive. The vibrations are real, and there is more than a painting in what Anela creates. The connection between the two is quick, decisive, and defies the laws of any connection they have ever experienced. Anela might be living in a world that feels like a trance, but Elysia makes that a reality in New York City. As they surrender to the pull of love and the awareness of a world that becomes dangerous, they must embrace a consciousness beyond themselves or determine what is real from what is imaginary.
The Artist Instance is the first book in the Instance Subworld series by Faruk Brbovic, and it stands out for its originality. I have never read anything like this before. There were moments when I reflected on the gift of some celebrated artists and wondered whether they were ever under a spell of consciousness or something beyond them. You are pulled into a world that feels eerie; it is like stepping into someone’s dream. Yet, it feels real. This book is a unique love story, replete with philosophical musings, a superb exploration of the metaphysical, and a conflict portrayed through the artistic expression of the key characters. It was exciting reading this book, and I praise the author for its uniqueness and depth of character.
