In T.V. Holiday’s Slaying Paradise, San Diego police officer Travis is driving home when a crash leaves him face-to-face with Mark, a mysterious man who says God has chosen him for a hidden supernatural war. Mark leads Travis to Carnage Coast, a hidden city where he must become the Iron Warrior, a champion sent to protect its people from the evil gathering there. Across the city, Lynda Lynch has spent six years trapped under Lazarus, a powerful pimp who runs the local drug trade. When an enigmatic stranger named Luc offers Lynda the life she has always wanted, she accepts his help and begins remaking her place in Carnage Coast. As Travis learns what his new role demands, both paths move toward the same battle for the city.
T.V. Holiday’s Slaying Paradise feels genuinely fearless in its imagination, and that says a lot in a superhero story. Travis gives the supernatural a human heartbeat through the compassion defining his character, so when concern for Domino’s daughter Ashley leads him to cover her hospital treatment, the gesture itself tells you who stands beneath the Iron Warrior armor. That understanding of character flows naturally into Detective Hicks’s friendship with college student Brittany, where remembering her favorite bear claw ends with him sheepishly eating half. Carnage Coast opens the story outward through landscapes like The Pavilion’s glass walls and domed roof, and a bayside dining room with live jazz and moonlight that touches the ocean. The result is fantasy with a world you can picture as readily as the people living inside it. Readers drawn to faith-powered superheroes facing spiritual warfare should put this on their reading list. Very highly recommended.
