The Black Sheep™: A Guide to Healing, Breaking Generational Cycles, and Finding Your Own Path by April Joy Bordon is a self-help book that explains what it means to be a black sheep in a dysfunctional family. It explores the concept of a dysfunctional family structure relating to a TV show where the main characters include the golden child, the scapegoat, the peacemaker, the lost child, and the parentified. The black sheep status is a sign of strength that differentiates a person who has refused to conform to an unhealthy pattern for the sake of peace at the expense of their own happiness and mental health. However, being different comes with its emotional tolls, particularly the feelings of guilt, self-doubt, and not being fully accepted.

I found The Black Sheep™ by April Joy Bordon to be very inspiring and relatable. It felt as though it spoke directly to me in a comforting manner but with some humor. April’s writing was unique, concise, and easy to comprehend. The discussions on subjects like self-acceptance, setting boundaries, and self-respect left no room for confusion. Reading through this book, there were moments when I had to pause for self-reflection and reassure myself that it is okay to be different. I appreciate that this book doesn’t merely diagnose the wounds inflicted by dysfunctional families on those who dare to be different; it also provides tangible exercises and boundary-setting techniques to help readers struggling to accept themselves, heal, and forge a new path forward. I found this book to be very motivating, and I recommend it to anyone who feels like a black sheep in their home.
