The Bookseller: A Somnium Chronicles Short Story by M. Blake Adams is a fun short story about two best friends running a used bookstore, Somnium, in southern California. Zachariah and Gabriel spend their days surfing, aspiring to great things, and trying to make a living selling books. Gabriel wants to be a writer, but finds he struggles with constructing a believable plot. Through all this, one girl strikes his fancy, coming into the bookstore every Wednesday like clockwork. Zachariah urges him to discover more about her, but Gabriel doesn’t have the courage to do so. Will he manage to find out her name and maybe take their relationship further? Or will he forever keep her at a distance, his ideal woman?
Mr. Adams has a way with description even in such a short story. I enjoyed every moment of the interchange between Zachariah and Gabriel. Both characters are believable and share a great rapport. I could picture the interior of the bookshop and smell the sea air as they rode the waves. I’m from California and this gave me a great picture of coastal life. I hope Mr. Adams intends on continuing his series and perhaps publishing the short stories in an anthology some day. I would love to know the inspiration for the tales and cannot wait to read more about the adventures of Gabriel and Zachariah. The Bookseller: A Somnium Chronicles Short Story is a great short read that will take you away from the drudgery of day-to-day life, if only for a little while.
