The Boy, the Cube, and the Elf is the first book of the Central Fire Series by Brent Golembiewski. At the remote Siler Station on Cellular Route E49B, Nico Flask wakes up to discover that his parents are missing, and he is currently the sole inhabitant of the abandoned station. Suddenly, a young elf girl arrives at the station on a starship, searching for Nico's father, Nicodemus. Nico and the girl, Maddie Deedlit, look for Nico's parents all over the station, but the unexpected arrival of the bounty hunter Marduk forces them to flee the station on the Silent Sprite. Marduk wants the blue Nav-Cube Maddie possesses. Pursued by the relentless Marduk, Nico and Maddie must navigate a card cheater, angry goblins, and a fierce dragon on the way to reunite with their parents.

Featuring magic, mystery, futuristic tech, and lots of action, The Boy, the Cube, and the Elf is a thrilling sci-fi/fantasy novel for preteens and young adults. Author Brent Golembiewski has woven a fast-paced plot filled to the brim with suspense and intrigue. The pages fly by as each chapter brings a new set of surprises for the reader, ensuring they are completely invested in the story and the characters. The dynamic between Nico and Maddie is fascinating. I liked that the two main characters have distinct personalities, as their constant back-and-forth made the narrative all the more entertaining. I was also a little surprised by the appearance of the dragon in a story set in space. Overall, it's a captivating adventure that is bound to bring joy to young science fiction/fantasy fans.
