Delavan gets inspiration from his father and grandfather, both knights of Oliaric who died defending Bretinia. Armed with his grandfather's sword, Delavan enlists with a group of trained guardsmen that protect the city from elves. Unfortunately, his father, who is a mage with supernatural abilities, becomes a hindrance to his enlistment. Frelarie, one of the arms masters in charge of accepting recruits, gives him a chance. His training does not go as planned because a gruesome incident breaks his sword and eventually leads to his dismissal and exile. Frelarie put her job on the line for him and they are exiled together. The two leave the city and begin their mission of protecting Bretinia from the elves. Join Delavan as he gains the freedom to harness his powers and become a brave protector of his city in The Broken Blade by Carol Hightshoe.
The Broken Blade is the first installment in the series and it grabbed my attention from the start. It is an epic fantasy with all the right ingredients. Carol Hightshoe has created a new, intriguing world with unique mythology and history. I was invested in Delavan's plight and could not help but fall in love with this determined character. Despite the discrimination he faced from his fellow citizens and colleagues, he still wanted to protect them. In my opinion, Frelarie is a mysterious character. She goes out of her way to protect Devalan, even when she knows her life and prestigious job are in danger. There is something in her past pushing her to help him and I cannot wait to read the next book in the series to find out more. Awesome story.
