The Call by Cathy Schieffelin is a thrilling blend of medical suspense and captivating romance set in diverse international locations. The story begins with Nate and his team on the beautiful island of Comoros on assignment, where he awakens to find his team unresponsive. Fearing the worst, he reaches out to his friend Campbell, who quickly sends Juliette and Darrien to help. Something about Nate appeals to Juliette, and they form an undeniable connection before long. However, both have unresolved issues from past relationships. For Juliette, her past is now affecting both her personal and professional life in apparent and troubling ways. Additionally, some legal repercussions of her past have now come back to haunt her. Can she overcome these challenges to make a life with Nate, or will the shadows of her past ultimately tear them apart?

In The Call, Cathy Schieffelin masterfully incorporates the cultural aspects of the unique locations into the narrative. I loved the vivid descriptions of the East African islands and the Colombian countryside. In particular, the rich portrayal of the food from each culture added an extra layer of sensory richness to the story. The narrative is written from Nate's and Juliette's alternating points of view, making readers feel they are getting a glimpse of their diaries. This offered an intimate insight into their thoughts, actions, emotions, and struggles. As a result, readers can empathize with their journeys and personal struggles. Readers who love immersive, descriptive stories with unique settings will connect deeply with Nate and Juliette’s story.
