Susan L. Markloff’s The Legends That Awaken is book four in the acclaimed The Human-Born Era series. Previously, American teenager Jen Monroe discovered she was part dragon hybrid and became part of a war spreading from the distant world of Tilion onto Earth. Hunted by the conqueror Cregorous, Jen traveled beside other Human Borns across multiple countries while alien protectors trained them for a prophecy connected to the survival of both worlds. Now, more than two years after the fighting in the Expanse, a break has settled over Agerius as Jen prepares for sacred trials linked to the hidden Archives of Niveus. When an ally is captured inside Caliga, Jen joins a dangerous siege against Cregorous, only to uncover plans formed during his long silence that threaten every family, alliance, and future built before an eruption of battle starts anew.

Susan L. Markloff’s The Legends That Awaken shows that large-scale fantasy succeeds when its characters continue behaving like recognizable people even while worlds, prophecies, and armies surround them. Jen Monroe emerges as the novel’s emotional center because her authority comes from conscience as much as strength. During the siege against Cregorous in the ruined city of Caliga, her decision to return the chained creature Fenris peacefully to his original dimension reveals restraint unusual for a young warrior shaped by constant conflict. Markloff also gives the rescue mission emotional urgency through Krelien, the teleporter fighting beside Jen, while fearing what captivity may have done to the imprisoned and healing Streya. His anxiety before entering Caliga gives the invasion a human pulse beneath the warfare. Tilion itself has the feel of a civilization shaped by generations of earlier battles, especially through sacred Zaheri records and ancient armor still treated with reverence during combat. Readers drawn toward science fantasy built around alien civilizations, prophetic warfare, and emotionally grounded ensemble casts will be thrilled with this.
