Leia is on a mission with Walt to find out more about the “Other Side” in The Deep, Book 3 in the Island Series by Jen Minkman. Together with Walt’s father and some of the other people from Tresco, they hope to make a connection with the people who now live in the area where their ancestors originated. The hope is that the war of years gone by has left something to return to and they receive quite a surprise when they arrive in Penzance and travel on to Dartmoor and Exeter. Meanwhile, Alisa continues to serve as liaison between her home of Hope Harbor and the village of Newexter, bringing the people together to work side by side for a better future. Putting the past aside, she becomes involved with Saul, former leader of Newexter, who has moved off by himself to live quietly. Little do they realize that things are about to change drastically – even more than anyone could have expected – when the explorers return home from across the sea.
The Deep, Book 3 of the Island Series by Jen Minkman is an exciting story, full of action and plenty of emotion. All the characters are going through dramatic changes that will determine the course of their lives so that the thoughts and feelings they share provide tremendous insight into their personal struggles and growth. Set in the far distant future, the story takes place against the backdrop of a virtually devastated England and it is extremely interesting to see what the people have used to develop their personal philosophies and religions. It would be easier to understand if this book were read after the first two volumes, but the story does stand well by itself.
