In The Ear Bend: Pawsome Pals by Shannon Mori, Champ looks at pictures of himself from when he was just a pup. He sees that he is different from the other dogs he knows. Instead of his ears standing up as most ears do, Champ has one ear that bends forward in the middle. His human Charlie has a few things to say about the way Champ is feeling over the things that make him appear so different than the others. Why does Champ feel so worried over such a minor difference? What will Charlie say about Champ’s insecurities? Will Champ see himself in a different light?

The Ear Bend is an adorable children’s story about a dog who discovers that his shape and look have changed as he’s grown up over the years. I love that Charlie, Champ’s human, decides that talking to his dog about how he feels is better than letting him go through it alone. This story will help teach kids to embrace and celebrate their differences rather than seeing them as character flaws that present a problem for them. The illustrations are beautiful and give the story colorful clarity that kids will love. I recommend The Ear Bend by Shannon Mori to young children who love stories about pets that will help them see themselves in a new way. I genuinely enjoyed this story and the lessons it teaches kids, and hope that Mori has more books like this one coming in the future.
