The Earth Loves Me by Terrill Martinez is a love poem about the earth. Each spread contains a simple sentence highlighting a special quality of the earth. A young girl is pictured on each page, marveling at the things she sees and experiences. All corners of the earth are touched on, from the mountains to the seas. All types of weather are experienced from snow to rain to bright, beautiful sunny days. The inhabitants of the earth, plants, animals, and people are celebrated too. Throughout the story, an appreciation of the diversity and majesty of our blue planet is displayed. A fun little activity is included at the end of the book.

The Earth Loves Me introduces the youngest readers to the overwhelming beauty of the earth. Kids will relate to many of the activities, like walking in the rain and making snow angels. I can picture parents and teachers reading this book outdoors so kids can feel the grass beneath their feet and the wind on their faces. The illustrations by Elsa Escoto depict a young girl with flowing brown hair. She is often shown with a joyous expression as she experiences the wonder of the world around her. Even though the story is simple and could serve as a first reader, it covers a wide variety of the wonders of the natural world. This book by Terrill Martinez is a perfect choice to read for Earth Day, Arbor Day, or any day you feel like celebrating our unique planet.
