The Eater of Flies by Richard Gadz is a chilling Victorian Gothic horror novel set in 1868 London. When a sealed box from Transylvania is opened, it releases a vampyr: a parasitic creature that inhabits human hosts, regardless of age or gender, and feeds on their blood. As the vampyr terrorizes Holmwood’s music hall, betrayal and death follow in its wake. With time running out, the desperate survivors must find a way to trap the creature and return it to the grave before more of its kind arrive. Combining crime, dark humor, and greed, Gadz offers a fresh, sinister twist on vampiric lore.
Author Richard Gadz has a clear passion for classic horror, and it’s that kind of inside-out knowledge and love for the genre that makes this reimagining of vampire mythology uniquely horrifying and new for fans. I adore the 1800s and that classic time of Gothic scenes and smoky landscapes. The richly atmospheric Victorian setting enhances the story’s eerie and immersive tone perfectly with some gorgeous prose sections. The writing is confident and sharp, with dark humor and brilliant social commentary at just the right moments to keep things fresh and remind readers that this is far from a typical vampire story. The structure was also well-thought-out, with a relentless pace and rising tension that makes for a gripping and unsettling read where every twist is a genuine surprise, yet makes sense and fits satisfyingly into the plot. Overall, The Eater of Flies is a must-read for horror fans that I highly recommend, from an author I can’t wait to explore further.
