In Edward Newton’s The Divided States of America, ten years after the United States divided, the conservative Republic governs one half while the progressive districts called the Blue control the other. History professor Barry Royale discovers evidence that senior officials profited from the separation. His search draws Locke, a secretive informant who warns that the theft of national artifacts forms part of a larger political plan. Meanwhile, former soldier Abra Colorado investigates an attempt on the life of Najeeb Kahn, the businessman she protects in the Republic. Their separate paths converge in Verona, a city beside the border, where their investigations reveal that political leaders are preparing violence capable of restarting conflict between the two countries. To expose the conspiracy, they must cross a nation built to keep its citizens separated by ideology.
Edward Newton’s The Divided States of America is a political dystopia whose inventive premise turns partisan division into a plausible future. The world-building is incredible, and Newton builds ideas like the Progressive Districts of Earth through Personal Assistant Devices that conduct votes on new laws, and shapes the conservative Republic through religious government and private enterprise. Each system serves its society’s values, giving national division credible logic. It's familiar to an uncomfortable degree, and that's what makes it so immersive. Newton asks who profits when political identity replaces citizenship, then presents Purple cooperation as a third position. Barry Royale and Abra Colorado are exceptional alternating points of view that Newton uses to give the political divide a human partnership. An original, affecting novel for readers who enjoy intelligent and entertaining speculative political fiction.
