Doucette weaves an eerie, unsettling thread throughout the storyline. While the novel provides glimpses into real-life crimes and serial killings, something more sinister seems to bide its time at a distance. As an age-old battle between good and evil rears its head, the darkness of Tom’s past threatens to engulf his present. Doucette shows how evil can be multifaceted. Some people are sinful, gaining pleasure from unleashing horror on others. Yet, some unfortunate, helpless souls choose to do the devil's work out of mad grief and desperation. I loved the redemptive arc that broke an ancient curse and helped Tom face his demons, in a literal sense. The steadily mounting horror ends in a thrilling climax. I recommend Blood Moon Over Betonville by Bernard Doucette to readers who love paranormal thrillers, especially those who enjoyed The Dresden Files or The Outsider. This will be a perfect read for the spooky season.
