In The Equals, Ken Kirkberry combines mystery and horror in creating a striking story that is both action-packed and exciting. When policewomen Vicky Lloyd and her friend, Alana, slightly miss a murderer while in action, Vicky is teamed up with Matthew Vansing to help solve the murder. This begins her introduction into a world she never knew existed, a world of vampires, werewolves, mermen, demons and equals. With Matt’s help, she learns of her ancestry and her role in this mysterious world. Danger, however, lurks everywhere as Vicky and her friends are faced with the daunting task of defeating a fearsome foe. Vicky quickly learns that the new world is not unlike any other. It contains members who have harboured grudges for centuries and are willing to destroy peaceful coexistence to fulfil their own selfish desires.

Ken Kirkberry quickly drew me into a thrilling story through fast-paced action and hair-raising scenes. From the start, the suspense is riveting and the danger that lurks beyond is almost palpable. The characters are mysterious and a few surprises lie ahead. Kirkberry’s creative descriptions are vivid, making the story even more thrilling. The imaginative and detailed description of the vampires’ world is one of the most outstanding features of the book. I also liked that the story began with Vicky being clueless about what awaited her. This way, as the reader, I was able to learn about her new world and life along with her. The Equals by Ken Kirkberry is an exciting read for fans of mystery and horror.
