In Mehdi Mejri's The Fives' Oath: Legacy of the Bloodborn, at nineteen, Bryn Blackskull belongs to a warrior clan protecting the mountain realm of the Iron Vales. To earn the clan’s highest rank, he must survive the Maw of Shadows, an underground trial that has killed earlier candidates. Bryn emerges alive as an earthquake shakes the region, awakening fear of a prophecy about Zarek Blackskull’s descendants. Soon, a creature made from living shadow begins destroying settlements. Its appearance suggests that someone has recovered the Tongue of Doom, a forbidden book once used to create monsters. Because the prophecy points toward Bryn’s bloodline, his victory places him beneath suspicion just as his family needs every warrior. Chieftain Elgon Blackskull must find the summoner before the next attack reaches Skull Village and divides the clan from within.
Mehdi Mejri’s Legacy of the Bloodborn is an incredible epic fantasy, and Mejri has fleshed out a world that is as ambitious as it is immersive. Bryn, the chieftain’s son, is loyal and remarkably compassionate, comforting his older brother Ezekiel when needed, and carrying an unconscious recruit away from imminent death. I love Cyrene, the queen’s younger sister, who treats injured children and has a loving bond with her sister Elara. The world-building is massive, and much of it is through social status outside the warrior clans. Mejri's near-cinematic descriptions of landscapes steal the scenes, from carved walls at Skull Cave and tunnels choked by human bones, to across the Golden Sea, where Goldenfist places the royal Blue Tomb beyond a bridge and a towering wall divides the capital. Beautifully written and bold, readers who enjoy warrior families caught inside royal schemes will adore this.
