George WB Scott's captivating novel The Good King transports readers to the dawn of the Middle Ages and the emergence of Christendom in Europe. The book masterfully depicts the transformative power of this new religion which offers a stark counterpoint to pagan customs that reigned in the continent's early fiefdoms. Duke Wenceslas is at the heart of the tale, a compelling figure known famously as a patron saint of Czechoslovakia. The Good King, as he is referred to by Scott, is a tireless advocate for Christian values within his influential yet humble kingdom. Scott’s tale is set in ancient Bohemia and revolves around the confession of Boleslav who has slain his brother to become the duke and slow the spread of Christianity. The confession reveals the circumstances and traditions that led to Wenceslas's death. Boleslav hopes his confession might earn him some forgiveness and, perhaps, lead to redemption.

George WB Scott’s portrayal of Wenceslas' lifelong commitment to his faith and people lends a profound depth to his character. The Good King is an unforgettable read for those intrigued by the complex dynamics of history and faith. The story contrasts paganism and Christianity, showcasing the stark contrasts between local barbaric practices and the teachings of Jesus Christ. It paints a vivid picture of past pagan rituals and cruel actions. Scott doesn't shy away from describing the brutal reality of medieval times, including raids on small villages, kidnapping of people for slavery, and instances of rape and plunder. While graphic, these descriptions serve to illustrate the stark contrast between the past and present. Overall, Scott's story is both an engaging read and a historical education.
