The Grandest Small Folk Tales by Christine Larsen and Cirena Larsen-Bolland is a whimsical collection of short stories, poems, and revelations either written by or about the main author, Christine’s four-year-old granddaughter, Cirena. I was expecting to be a bit bored by this collection, and instead I found myself enjoying it immensely and reading parts of it aloud to my own four-year-old daughter. I thoroughly enjoyed Patient Record at Nurse Cirena’s Hospital, and my very favorite was Wriggly Squawky Poems. The selections in this story are short enough to capture a youngster’s attention, and are enjoyable enough that you may find yourself reading parts of it again and again, as I did.

Reading The Grandest Small Folk Tales brought to mind sitting at my own Nana’s knee as she made up silly songs and riddles for me. It not only brought back these pleasant memories, but it also inspired me to find the lyrics to near-forgotten songs and teach them to my own four-year-old daughter. A book like this has so much to offer, and it is surely something that will be enjoyed for years to come by both the Larsen family and by any family who finds this book and the others by Christine Larsen. The world as seen through the eyes of a preschooler is a beautiful, funny, and wonderful thing, and adults often need a reminder of this when things get too hectic. What a treasure!
