The Great Bellybutton Cover-up is a delightful children’s book written by Susan Ross. Violet is a beautiful and wooly sheep who wins first place at the County Fair in the sheep beauty pageant. She is devastated when Farmer Shepherd sheers her glamorous wool coat leaving her with a bare bellybutton. Violet must overcome the odds and find innovative ways to dress herself while hiding her bellybutton. She then discovers the reason of why Farmer Shepherd needed to shave her wool off and she comes away with a sense of pride in knowing she has done a good deed. Included in this book is a bonus section that includes instructions on how to create your own sheep to go with the story.

This children’s book contains 32 pages filled with the fun adventures of Violet the sheep. It is a fresh new story that I have not read about before and I absolutely enjoyed the concept. The wording flows smoothly and it is very easy for children to comprehend. The illustrations are bright, fun and compliment the story perfectly. The sketches detail the facial expressions on Violet’s face intricately, capture her emotions and bring added significance to the story. I loved the variety of emotions that Violet experiences and her creative ways to dress herself. I couldn’t help but laugh at the silliness and I know that children will truly love this wonderful book by Susan Ross. Also, the bonus section on how to create your own sheep is very helpful and will be a fun activity for parents or teachers to make with the children.
