Author Biography

MJ Moores caught the writing bug at the age of 9 then honed her understanding of character in high school drama and creative writing classes. After teaching for a decade, she focused on raising her son and then became a librarian!

The title and inspiration for The Hollow Kiss came during the early days of raising her son. She visited an author blog enticing readers to create a title for a book using a Title Generator the author built herself. There, The Hollow Kiss was born. Encouraged to give a fun summary of what the book could be about (based on the genre provided in the generator), MJ discovered a "new story" she just had to tell.

The Hollow Kiss: White Raven Book 1 by M.J. Moores is a blend of urban fantasy, mystery, and the supernatural. When Corvina Dray wakes up with a pounding headache, a strange tattoo on her arm, and no memory of the night before, her world turns upside down. Even more disturbing, only she can see the blood-smeared writing on her bedroom walls. Determined to recover her memories, Dray retraces her steps, only to find herself locking lips with a stranger who drops dead instantly. Things spiral further when Char, the last person seen with Dray the previous night, appears and helps her dispose of the body. As Char introduces Dray to a hidden underground world, Dray must uncover the identity of the one who branded her, shake the police from her trail, and avoid stepping on the wrong toes.

As Dray pieces together the truth behind her transformation and the disturbing kiss, readers are introduced to a hidden society of fae, lycans, reapers, aura readers, and paranormal lore. The world-building is immersive, revealing a supernatural underworld governed by secret rules and dangerous hierarchies. M.J. Moores avoids info-dumps, instead letting the mystery unravel naturally through Dray’s interactions and discoveries. Dray is the main character readers will root for. She’s an outsider, sarcastic yet headstrong. The Hollow Kiss chronicles Dray’s growth from being isolated and lost to discovering herself and unexpected allies she’d never had. The pacing is brisk, the writing cinematic, with sky-high tension. The Hollow Kiss is a darkly thrilling start to a promising series; perfect for fans of The Mortal Instruments.

M.J. Moores delivers a captivating fantasy in The Hollow Kiss. Corvina Dray has recently graduated from high school and is looking for something to keep her busy while she figures out her next step. What she didn’t expect was a gap in her memory and a new tattoo on her arm that burns like crazy. Dray, as she prefers to be called, is thrown into a world filled with Specials and suddenly possesses a deadly power that can reap souls. One kiss from Dray and it’s game over. After Dray’s first victim is consumed, Char appears to help her hide the body. Together, Dray and Char try to uncover who is behind Dray’s condition, find a way to break the hold they have on her, and avoid getting arrested.

Author M.J. Moores creates a fantasy world grounded in reality. Writing in the first-person perspective of our protagonist was an essential choice. This allows the reader to experience her thoughts and feelings firsthand. Characters are described in detail, making it easy to visualize them. The pace is steady and will keep you devouring page after page. The plot is unique, and the action is well-choreographed. The Hollow Kiss cast offers an array of mythical creatures. This is the first book in the White Raven series, setting the foundation for a marvelous fantasy to sink your teeth into. This story is suitable for young adult readers, featuring mild language and a few sensual scenes. I look forward to the next part of Dray’s journey.

The Hollow Kiss: White Raven Book 1 by MJ Moores follows Corvina Dray, a newly awakened girl of magic, as she investigates what happened to her when she woke up with no memory of the past 12 hours. After discovering abilities, she navigates magical hazards and threats from supernatural beings, including shapeshifters, witches, and a djinn. With guidance from allies—Char, Shawn, and Nora—Dray uncovers her magical inheritance, and desperately tries to balance her work at the paranormal club Spotlight with her investigation, tracking mystical markings, surveilling patrons, and preparing counter spells. Dray’s main goal is to understand what happened to her and protect herself and other Specials, while neutralizing the curse and surviving repeated magical and physical dangers.

The Hollow Kiss by MJ Moores delivers a fast-moving, imaginative story that is chockablock with a unique brand of inventive magic. I like the premise of Dray trying to wrap her human understanding around a very "unreal" supernatural problem. The supporting cast, which includes Nora’s guidance and Shawn’s support, goes a long way in elevating the story. Readers are invited into a space with new magic and plenty of fun, unusual ingredients, such as unicorn hair, and herbal lore, right alongside Dray. There are a lot of moving pieces, but Moores does well in their construct, taking us through dangerous wards, introducing mystical beings and balancing the various aspects of Dray's new challenges. Every scene presents fresh surprises, and with a capable female protagonist with determination, this is a solid first entry in the promising White Raven series. Very highly recommended.
