The Hollow Kiss: White Raven Book 1 by M.J. Moores is a blend of urban fantasy, mystery, and the supernatural. When Corvina Dray wakes up with a pounding headache, a strange tattoo on her arm, and no memory of the night before, her world turns upside down. Even more disturbing, only she can see the blood-smeared writing on her bedroom walls. Determined to recover her memories, Dray retraces her steps, only to find herself locking lips with a stranger who drops dead instantly. Things spiral further when Char, the last person seen with Dray the previous night, appears and helps her dispose of the body. As Char introduces Dray to a hidden underground world, Dray must uncover the identity of the one who branded her, shake the police from her trail, and avoid stepping on the wrong toes.
As Dray pieces together the truth behind her transformation and the disturbing kiss, readers are introduced to a hidden society of fae, lycans, reapers, aura readers, and paranormal lore. The world-building is immersive, revealing a supernatural underworld governed by secret rules and dangerous hierarchies. M.J. Moores avoids info-dumps, instead letting the mystery unravel naturally through Dray’s interactions and discoveries. Dray is the main character readers will root for. She’s an outsider, sarcastic yet headstrong. The Hollow Kiss chronicles Dray’s growth from being isolated and lost to discovering herself and unexpected allies she’d never had. The pacing is brisk, the writing cinematic, with sky-high tension. The Hollow Kiss is a darkly thrilling start to a promising series; perfect for fans of The Mortal Instruments.
