Detective Cat Crearo of the Indiana State Police and Sheriff Robert Delaney are on the hunt for a killer in Clear Creek. In The Hometown Hero’s Last Shot by Karen L West, Johnny Sinclair, a basketball star player and local hero, is found dead in the high school gym. He was known to work out there every morning with his protégé, B.J. Rice. Clear Creek is a small town where everyone knows one another and everyone supposedly loved Johnny. Except for Candy Sue, Johnny’s former high school girlfriend, and Eddie White, his former best friend. Eddie had a physical altercation with Johnny the previous evening. Both B.J. Rice and Candy Sue were seen near the gym during the time of the murder. Could they be involved? What about the man in the blue Ford seen driving by the gym at the same time? Could he be the murderer?
The Hometown Hero’s Last Shot: An Indiana Small-Town Murder Mystery by Karen L West is a fast-moving, well-crafted police procedural. The author provides a great amount of detail about the crime scene and the process involved in the murder investigation. This level of detail and the dialogue between the characters help keep the story moving at a brisk pace. The author is adept at dropping clues and kept me guessing about the motive until the murderer’s summation. I particularly enjoyed the witty back-and-forth between the two main investigators and the many colorful and sometimes humorous descriptions of the town’s people and places.
