"In Icarus Void" by C. K. Burch readers join the voyage to the stars with the crew of Icarus, a ship designed with heat shields strong enough to withstand the high temperatures of stars. This is Captain Gordon Markov’s last mission. Like all captains he would like to go out in a blaze of glory. This mission just might provide the notoriety he desires. The scientists on board are part of the research team headed by Dr. Catherine Tybalt. As the crew and research team prepare to begin their mission they observe an alien object suspended in orbit close to the star. Dr. Tybalt wants the object retrieved for research purposes. What they discover is not logical. The object is hollow. By all laws of nature it should not have withstood the heat from the star. The attempt to retrieve the object is dangerous and pushes the ship and crew to the brink of disaster. Tybalt insists that the knowledge they can gain from the object could further stardiving and is worth the risk. Reluctantly the captain agrees and at great danger to the ship and its inhabitants, retrieves the object and brings it on board. From the moment the object is brought aboard things begin to go wrong. Will any of them survive?
"Icarus Void" is a cross between horror and science fiction. The tale is filled with twists and turns that keep this reader eagerly turning pages. Burch masterfully builds the tension to a stunning ending. I recommend this book for adults only. I find the plot to be strong, creative and a unique take on space travel and the vast unknown.
