In Craig Rostron’s Dogleg, Cole travels to Kauai to scatter his father’s ashes from the seventeenth hole of the golf course his father loved, inviting his old college friend Hayes along under the guise of a golfing reunion. What begins as a private mission expands when Hayes brings his brother-in-law Leonard, whose enthusiasm quickly places him inside Cole’s planned trip. The arrival of Hayes’s wife Tara changes the holiday again. Cole has spent years keeping a distance between what he feels and what he says, yet Kauai puts him with people who remember earlier versions of him and have their own reasons for making the trip count. As golf plans slip into unexpected days on the island, old friendships begin asking more of everyone involved.
Craig Rostron’s Dogleg is a fantastic read, and Cole is someone who we genuinely want to root for. His softer side comes through, such as during a twelve-mile walk with a foster dog he insists will remain temporary. Alice, Leonard’s musician girlfriend, is wonderful, and her wit feeds her music naturally. This is someone who turns Leonard’s wrong poke order into the beginnings of a new song, and it is hilarious. Where the author truly shines is in the ability to pull readers into the settings, from Alice’s hotel room where recording equipment blinks into life, to a teal-painted coffee shack beneath tropical rain as Tara watches mist across the ocean. Well written and absorbing, readers who enjoy character-driven literary fiction will adore this book.
