Angel Giacomo’s The Jackson MacKenzie Chronicles: Broken Valor puts readers straight into the aftermath of war as Major Harry Russell awakens in a Hawaiian military hospital with only a scant memory of how he arrived there. Among Harry’s first conscious thoughts is his closest friend, Lt. Col. Jackson MacKenzie. What happened to MacKenzie, and where is he? When Major Russell learns that his battle buddy has been accused of treason and left behind to deteriorate in a military prison, Harry rises to the occasion. Pushing past both his physical and emotional pain, Harry sets out to clear MacKenzie’s name and reach him before the damage becomes irreversible. Their post-trauma reunion at the Double M Ranch is raw and honest. Their meet-up is a reminder that brotherhood forged in war doesn’t break, even when everything else falls apart.
Broken Valor by Angel Giacomo struck me hard. It is a heartfelt and captivating read that shows the emotional and physical wounds of service. After everything that Major Harry Russell had given for his country, his fellow citizens barely noticed the cost. Equally enduring is Harry’s unresolvable determination. Determination to overcome his physical impairment and save his closest friend. It is a struggle with clarity of mind and heart. His pain, isolation, and the quiet strength that keep him moving forward are vividly portrayed from chapter to chapter. It is impossible not to root for Harry’s success in this new mission. A powerful human novel, Broken Valor is a reminder of resilience, sacrifice, and the bonds that survive even the darkest of situations. Salute to the author for a superb work of historical military fiction, with my highest recommendation.
