The Last Dog: A "Tail" of Adoption by Liane Joly follows a young boy who goes to a dog shelter to adopt a furry friend. There are many different dogs to choose from and his parents ask him if he’s sure, as he took a long time making his decision. The dog he chose doesn’t fetch, doesn’t go for walks, and doesn’t sleep on the bed with the boy. Even so, he won’t take him back to the shelter. He is sure this is the dog he wants to keep because the dog is just like him. The boy knows that with a little patience and a lot of love, his new furry friend Buster will become part of the family.
The Last Dog by Liane Joly was such a touching story to read. It deals with the feelings of a young boy who has been through the process of adoption himself and knows what it’s like to have no roots until he finally reaches his forever home. The boy wants to do the same for a lonely dog that no one wants. This sweet story explores the loneliness of not having a family and the uncertainty of finding yourself in an unfamiliar environment. It shows that it is possible to find happiness and trust through perseverance. I think this book would be great for any child and offers sound lessons for young kids.
