Phases is a story that shows Nick's life from when he was young and felt out of place. It starts when he joins music school, meets Dara, and later meets Naia at a birthday party. After Naia disappears, Dara and Nick go to look for her in Sozopol. It is during their search that Nick realizes that he is in love with Dara. Dara is Nick's first love, and their relationship lasts five years filled with skiing and summer swimming. Their relationship began to have issues, and then Nick made a split-second decision to return to Paris alone. Read Phases: On Longing and Becoming by Alexander Exelmans to find out what becomes of Nick in the coming years.
Phases by Alexander Exelmans is told in the first person about Nick's life from 18 to his middle age and all the phases he went through. The book follows a steady pace because it was not rushed and did not have unnecessary drama. It just felt like Nick sat me down one night and told me the story of his life. Nick and Dara's love story felt so familiar and honest. The whole "friends to lovers" trope and first love story felt relatable while I read. I loved the lessons the book taught me and the core theme, which is the stages of life, as it really opened my eyes. The way it was written in the first person felt like advice from the writer, disguised through storytelling. I recommend this book to everyone who enjoys realistic fiction.
