The Last Doorbell by William Parker is a poignant literary novel where we're with Ben, a man whose past is supposed to be behind him. With his debts cleared and a trove of wild stories to entertain his friends, Ben is ready to move on. That is, until his old escort agency demands one final favor. With his finger poised over a doorbell, he unknowingly steps into a moment that will change his life forever. What begins as a reluctant act transforms into a journey of unexpected consequences, forcing Ben to confront his past and reconsider his future in ways he never imagined.

Author William Parker has an emotive touch to his narration that always leaves something for you to read between the lines. This introspective prose style beautifully captures the inner turmoil of a man at a real crossroads in his life, letting us in on every intimate detail of his struggles. This is a confidently penned work that revels in taking time to enjoy the writing and the attitudes of the characters. The combination of dark humor and emotional vulnerability creates a compelling, authentic story filled with enigmatic figures and unexpected moments of levity. The pacing is also great as the gradual unraveling of Ben’s backstory keeps the tension simmering throughout, giving us different insights into the shady things he supposedly left behind. Overall, for a raw and deeply moving story of redemption and regret, I would highly recommend The Last Doorbell to literary fiction fans everywhere.
