Stress, anxiety, and bad habits often prevent us from sleeping properly. The pressures of everyday life lead us to believe that sleep can be sacrificed to be more productive. However, sleep consolidates important cognitive functions such as learning and memory. That's why lack of sleep can affect us more than we imagine. Jerome Puryear, MD, has been through this experience, from his time as a medical student to his residency, to becoming a new father, and to working as a professional radiologist. He knows that lack of sleep affects our quality of life. That's why in Sleep Deprivation, he shares what we need to know to solve this problem. He explains everything from the history of human sleeping habits to the use of AI in sleep research.
I loved the way Jerome Puryear, MD, approaches each topic. Although he discusses complex concepts such as hormones and medications, he does so in an accessible way, using simple examples. He debunks myths, describes the most common sleep disorders, and is honest when sharing anecdotes about the conflicts he has faced due to lack of rest. He also includes informative illustrations with practical tips, such as how to sleep better when you have back pain. One of my favorite parts is the section dedicated to night shift workers. He clearly explains how to manage stress during those hours and shares useful tips, having gone through that experience himself. Sleep Deprivation will help you set a realistic sleep goal that fits your current lifestyle.
