The Last Hope by Hunter X. Johnson is set in the aftermath of a catastrophic accident where Horti, an Earth native, uncovers her identity as the long-lost princess of a decaying multiverse, heralding an odyssey of self-discovery. Accompanied by loved ones, she navigates the inscrutable realm of Dinnion Regency, a region steeped in xenophobia, seeking an extraordinary education to decode her latent potential. However, her path is obstructed by the Naturalista, a faction imbued with deep-seated prejudice. Nevertheless, Horti's tenacity propels her to flourish, inadvertently entangling her and her companions in a burgeoning rebellion and impending coup. This unveils their paradoxical endeavor: to safeguard the integrity of a realm that ostracizes them, shaking its foundational beliefs. The Last Hope is the first novel in series two of Hunter X. Johnson's The Dying Multiverse.

The world-building that Hunter X. Johnson has crafted for The Last Hope is exceptional. There are a lot of moving parts but the introduction of various species, political systems, and glimpses into different planets and galaxies is well done with visual prose that breathes life into a unique universe. Different races like the Azloc, Dinnion, Uzliumbax, and Destroyers, as well as described battles with the Gazronnaas, all add depth and a feeling of organic growth beyond what we have entered into as a reader. My two favorite characters are Horti and Craig. Through their dialogue and interactions, we get a sense of their personalities, their bond as friends, and their personal growth throughout the story. The internal struggles and doubts Horti shares, as well as Craig's supportive nature, provide relatability. Overall, this is a solid first entry into an ambitious project, and I look forward to seeing where it leads next.
