The Last Peacemaker by E.C. Fisher is set in 2620, centuries after nuclear war devastated Earth. Marcus Wyndom, a genetically engineered young man, emerges from Shelter 21-043 after spending ten years alone underground. His interest in old Western flicks has inspired him to carry Colt Peacemaker revolvers as he travels into the wasteland. His journey brings him to Purgatory, the ruins of Chicago, where Devlin McIntyre rules through his hold over essential supplies. When Marcus helps Molly, a young woman pursued by Devlin’s men, he becomes involved in the settlement’s affairs. His travels reach New Haven, a community established by shelter survivors who have rebuilt working infrastructure. Elsewhere, Salvation Height houses an isolated religious community, and Mission City, a fortified settlement built in a former scrapyard, offers another glimpse of civilization taking shape.
E.C. Fisher's The Last Peacemaker's post-apocalyptic world is a truly unique creation, with salvaged technology at home in the rugged reality of frontier life. Even the medicine had me excited about the almost limitless possibilities. Marcus, whose nanobots replenish his blood almost as quickly as it is drawn, inspires Dr. Anderson, a scientist at New Haven’s hydroponics facility, to wonder whether Marcus's body might revive radiation-damaged soil. It's impossible not to feel that hope of green landscapes returning someday right along with the characters. There are plenty of thrills and frights in the story, and moments where every tiny sound sends your imagination racing. Dr. Stevens hiding with Molly in an upstairs closet while a Ravager sniffs its way down the hallway? Those claws scratching the wooden floor had me practically hearing the creature breathe outside the door! This is a great read for dystopian science fiction fans and is absolutely worth picking up.
