The Legacy of the Jaded Hart by D.B. Carter is a young adult fantasy novel. Twins Ellie and Tom inherited a load of money from a family they never knew existed. On separate occasions, they were attacked by the same stranger and rescued by an anonymous hero. Their mother had lied to them all these years, and Ellie and Tom found out that their father was in a cult. Hoping their father had the answers, the twins decided to meet him. Tom and Ellie quickly understand that their father is more complex than first appears. The twins learn that he belongs to a long-forgotten group that is actively looking for the Jaded Hart, a legendary demonic stag. Meanwhile, the Jaded Hart is determined to track down the twins for its own purposes.
The Legacy of the Jaded Hart is extraordinary and complex. D.B. Carter created a world of lies, hope, and fantasy. The story was fast-paced and jam-packed with action. I could not put it down and turned the pages as fast as possible. With all the twists and turns, I never knew what to expect next. I was kept guessing until the end and the suspense had me on the edge of my seat. The characters were authentic and relatable. Tom was my favorite character. He embraced his new gift and used it to help everyone. The story is excellently written and had me hooked from the start. It exceeded my expectations by far, and the ending was a big surprise. I did not see it coming.
