The Legend of Harry Gardner by Michael Hill follows the story of an acclaimed sports journalist whose remarkable rise to fame is rooted in the history of Gridiron college football. In the early 1920s, Samuel "Peabo" Eliot grew up as an avid reader of sports journals, living on his family estate high above the Hudson River Valley in New York. For the first three seasons at Harvard University, Samuel covered all sorts of sports on behalf of the local university paper. But in his last year, the rise of Harvard's football team's star player and captain, Harry Gardner, caught his eye, and he covered every game of the Crimsons. Samuel's friendship with Harvard would continue after college until his untimely demise in Europe.

The Legend of Harry Gardner by Michael Hill is the story of two unlikely friends from different backgrounds who found common ground through their shared love for Gridiron football. Narrated in the style of classic sports novels, this concise yet captivating book offers readers a unique glimpse into the world of sports journalism in that era, highlighting the close relationships journalists had with the stars both on the field and in their personal lives. Samuel and Harry are both compelling characters, each marked by their ambition and relentless drive for success, refusing to let any distractions deter them from pursuing their dreams. Even after achieving significant success and earning a place at esteemed newspapers like The New York Times, Samuel never forgot to acknowledge Harry Gardner and the lasting impact he had on his career. I found the book very inspiring, and feel it's a must-read for sports aficionados as well as history buffs.
