The Life of Tomato by Romilda Byrd is a charming story in the Second Chances in the Garden series. The life of a tomato is a fun one, from first growth right through to harvest. Our tomato has long dreamed of what he will become, and he takes us on a journey as he grows and ripens on the farm. He dreams of what he will be part of, perhaps a salad or even a tomato salad. But one night, a storm hits, and Tomato’s dreams are dashed. Or are they? When Tomato meets the composting bin, something amazing happens, and a new adventure begins.

The Life of Tomato by Romilda Byrd is a lovely story that teaches children not just about gardening and growing their own food but also about sustainability. It also teaches kids about the cycle of life, and the wonderful illustrations by Tincho Schmidt provide readers with an excellent visual way to understand the story. This is a fun book as well as being educational, though, and kids will love the story and Tomato’s character. It’s easy to follow and understand, and is perfect for parents who want to teach their children about the environment and the importance of nature, and how it all works. It also teaches them that, when second chances are given, they should be grabbed with both hands. At the end of the book is an exercise for kids to follow on how to make their own compost bottle, the perfect way for them to learn. This is a great story and should be part of every child’s library.
