There is a new Magical Aquarium that’s just opened up in town. PJ is quite excited. She loves everything about the sea and she wants to learn everything she can about life in the sea. Her older sister, Blake, has already studied the sea at school and she offers to take PJ to the Magical Aquarium so that they can share what Blake knows and learn more. Their adventure begins at the ticket booth where they meet Merrie. She offers to give them a private tour. The girls are overwhelmed with all the sea creatures, but they’re even more overwhelmed when they meet Merrie’s mother and discover that she’s a mermaid. The girls are even invited to share in some mermaid tea and cakes. It’s quite an experience. They learn more about the sea from their new mermaid friend and her mother, and they realize and accept their responsibilities to respect and care for the sea.

Cat Michaels’ colorful educational book, The Magical Aquarium, is both fantasy and real. As PJ and her sister, Blake, embark on an exciting visit to the newly opened Magical Aquarium, they learn so much about life in the sea and the reader learns along with them. This is a playful story, full of fun, adventure, friendships, loving sibling relationships and, of course, the powerful lesson of all, to care for our environment, to care for the sea and all creatures that live in the sea. Beautifully told and certainly a joy to read.
