Sheena, the Allen family cat, has already developed a reputation as an adventurer, so when the family packs up and heads out on another trip, the wily cat does not hesitate to sneak onto the vehicle and join them. She quickly discovers how unforgiving the African outback can be when you are an unprepared house cat. She makes friends with a group of meerkats, thinking that it will be nothing more than a stopgap before she reunites with her family. As she integrates deeper into the Duwara pack, she gradually realises she is now in a simmering rivalry between her new friends and another pack of meerkats known as the Utongo pack. Can Sheena help these warring factions find peace before the damage on both sides becomes unforgivable? Find out in The Meerkat Wars by H.S. Toshack.

Sheena references her previous adventures so readers can pick up H.S. Toshack’s The Meerkat Wars as part of a series. Sheena’s strategically placed recollections give readers a sense of her adventures in previous books and provide context for some of her more daring schemes with the meerkats. The use of native Swahili names and detailed descriptions of the animals Sheena interacts with encourages young readers to do more research on the wildlife described. It also provides a humorous angle for young readers, especially when they try to pronounce some of the animals' tongue-twisting names. Toshack weaves these elements together in an entertaining narrative style, with a brisk pace, and the kind of eye-catching pictures that young readers will find irresistible. I enjoyed reading The Meerkat Wars and believe young readers will learn a thing or two from it.
