The Monster on Top of the Bed has a very unique twist. This book actually contains two stories within one. The first half is filled with the bright and colorful pages of the story, but without any words. Author Alan H. Jordan has chosen to leave it up to the reader to create his or her own version of the story. The scene is focused on a little girl's bedroom with a little girl and an odd little creature. The mother of the little girl eventually comes into the bedroom, and has a conversation with the child. Finally, the little girl snuggles in for bedtime. This first half of the book has a place at the beginning as well as at the end of the wordless section for the child, who comes up with a new story, to put his or her name in the book as the creator.

I love the very creative illustrations in The Monster on Top of the Bed. They are bright and cheery. There are a lot of things to choose from on each and every page to help children craft a fun and descriptive story. This is a book that a child could return to time and again, creating a new story each time. The second half of The Monster on Top of the Bed shares Jordan's version of the story. Though I did not find the author's version overly exciting, it may help a child to create his or her own story. Jordan also poses a few questions at the end to help spark a child's imagination.
