The Mother Who Loved Halloween by John Juettner is a book that has it all. It is a sad story, a mystery story, a sci-fi story and a horror story all rolled into one. Alicia loves Halloween and each year makes it very special for her four children until the night her son Josh is reported as dead. It is midnight, October 31st, when Officer Warner knocks at the door to inform Alicia that her oldest son was found dead. Warner tells her to come to the police station first thing in the morning to identify the body and find out the details of Josh’s murder. When Alicia arrives at the station and is taken to the real Officer Warner, rather than the man who appeared at her door the night before, the story really begins. Jack Fuller is the detective assigned to the case and he takes it so seriously that he eventually loses his job and travels to Wyoming to find Houston West, the man he believes killed young Josh. There is an evil force working in each of the men. This force leads them to do things they otherwise might never have done.

John Juettner has written a strong book that will keep you reading late into the night. The Mother Who Loved Halloween covers several genres not usually all mixed together as one. I found myself hurting for Alicia, rooting for Fuller and not liking Houston very much. I was surprised by the sudden ending but would still highly recommend this book as one that will keep you on the edge of your seat. This is John Juettner’s first novel but I can only hope it is not his last.
