I have been reading a lot of novels based on Norse mythology this month. I like them. I like the war. I like the doom and gloom attitude of Norse warriors. The Oath Breaker by Alaric Longward met all my expectations about stories centered around Norse mythology. It is a novel about Germania and Rome. It is the first book in a series called the Hraban Chronicles. I loved this book and hope to read the books that follow. I was a soldier and I like books about soldiers and fighting. But what I like even more is books about warriors. There are no better battles in history than those between the warriors of Germania and the soldiers of Rome. Thank goodness that the writing of Alaric Longward is on a level worthy of these two awesome enemies. It makes for a great novel.
What I like most about The Oath Breaker is the detailed depiction of individual combat. Not many can do it well. Alaric Longward can. These fights are good and the writing lets you picture every move. This is good writing and I appreciate it. This is a great story, but in the hands of someone not as talented as Alaric Longward, it might very well have turned out to be just another so-so book. Instead, it is great. The characters are perfect for the era in which they live. The feudal politics dominate the tale because it’s also family politics. Hraban is not a happy man. He has not had a happy life nor lived in happy times. This makes for a great story.
