The Odd Chick, by author Mary Esparza-Vela, is a truly delightful cute read. It is a wonderful addition to any collection for a very young audience as a bed time story. The story of Buki, the odd chick out, gives the adult readers reading it some chuckles as Buki and the story are so cute. It begins with a huge egg being hatched and Buki not looking like any other chick on the farm. The father feels Buki is different and is frightened of him; the other chicks are scared of him too because he is so big and different, and his mother, Kora the hen, is the only one that loves him. He feels that his dad doesn’t love him and that makes him sad. Soon, he redeems himself and proves to his family that he is indeed one of them by using his instincts to protect his family.

Artist Kevin Collier illustrated the book with vivid art work that instantly catches the eyes of the reader and is sure to entertain and captivate young ones. There is a lot to look at and keep them busy with bright colors and big depictions. I would highly recommend this book to parents and adults who like to read to young children. The children will love to flip the pages over and over again. The author and the artist collaborated seamlessly with this good children’s book.
