A young man’s life spirals out of control when he becomes the target of a larger conspiracy in the sci-fi legal suspense novel, Juris Ex Machina by John W. Maly. It’s the 22nd century, and Arcadia, an airtight dome city, depends on AI as its justice system. When mischievous 19-year-old Rainville, who has always been a little too smart for his own good, is accused of mass murder, he has to place his trust in Arcadia’s complex but swift AI justice system to keep him out of Wychwood. This is an imprisonment facility with a dark, sordid history steeped in unfounded rumors. But when things take a sudden, frightening twist, Rainville’s strength and endurance are tested. With his hope pinned on one man alone, will he survive the horrors that await him outside Arcadia's sterile dome?
Juris Ex Machina by John W. Maly is an expertly written novel. Not for the faint of heart, it explores the darker aspects of an advanced civilization dependent on AI. Dark, intense, and delightfully technical, this novel has it all. I appreciated Rainville’s personal life, the sweet relationship with his girlfriend, and the surprising ending. From the fascinating storyworlds of Arcadia and Wychwood to the complex systems of AI justice and a warden-free prison, this novel drew me in from the first page to the last. With many plot twists and turns, the novel ends well, but with a hint of a sequel.
Delightfully narrated by the incomparable Marc Thompson, the audio is both incredibly entertaining and outstanding. I was deeply impressed by the crisp, clean audio quality. Marc, known for narrating multiple characters in one work, beautifully portrayed the full cast of characters and the accompanying sound effects. His tone and pacing were spot-on. Known for narrating over 50 Star Wars audiobooks and voicing television characters such as several of MTV’s Daria characters, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, and more, Marc Thompson has again proven his versatility and professionalism.
