The Return to Deephaven is the second book in The Adventures of Crimson and the Guardian series by Karen Cossey. Twelve-year-old Kinsey is tired of reading the enormous pile of books entrusted to her by her father, Lord Eric Bardin. When she discovers that she has been chosen to explore the Deephaven caves -- a former colony of tworns, two-headed dragon-life creatures -- as the bearer of the Pendant of Peace, alongside her unicorn companion Crimson, her sister Liliana, and a motley crew of dwarves and humans, she is determined to make her mark. However, the quest is dangerous as unknown perils lie in their path. Kinsey and her friends now must overcome the monstrous tworns as well as a deceptive nemesis who is using the powers of the evil black crystal to entrap the dragons.
Wondrously creative and action-packed, The Return to Deephaven is an absorbing fantasy for children and young adults alike. Author Karen Cossey builds a sprawling world full of magic, monstrous creatures, conniving villains, and brave heroes that hook you in from the first page and refuse to let go until the end. The plot moves at a brisk pace, taking multiple twists and turns along the way that you never see coming. I found the characters colorful and vibrant. Their distinct personas pop out of the pages, making them thoroughly compelling and entertaining to read. The action sequences are vividly described, and you'll have a lot of fun going through those scenes. If you're a fan of stories featuring elves, dwarves, and dragons, The Return to Deephaven is the perfect book for you.
