The Rock And Roll Almanac by Andrew Craneman is a detailed, date-specific chronology of significant events in rock music history spanning over 70 years. It catalogs landmark album releases, band milestones, artist activities, legal issues, births, and deaths, covering influential moments such as Johnny Cash’s 1959 San Quentin concert, The Beatles’ 1962 Decca rejection, and Nirvana’s 1989 signing with Sub Pop. The timeline includes pivotal concerts, chart changes like the 2009 UK digital download update, and music industry shifts. Key entries lean into notable releases, band formations and breakups, legal controversies, and anniversaries, including events involving artists such as Jimi Hendrix, Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, and Metallica. The book systematically documents specific dates across decades, illustrating the evolution of rock and its huge cultural impact.

The Rock And Roll Almanac: A Day-By-Day Journey Through 70 Years of Legendary Music History by Andrew Craneman is a meticulously organized and wonderful account of significant moments in rock music. As someone who grew up in a country where rock music isn't really a thing, I loved that I could experience new-to-me classics, but I got so much background on both the songs and musicians. Craneman’s writing style is clear and accessible in its wealth of facts and anecdotes. The most interesting to me is Johnnie Johnson’s influence on Chuck Berry, and the release of groundbreaking albums like Cream’s Disraeli Gears and Soundgarden’s Ultramega OK. Whether a reader is looking for nuggets such as MTV Unplugged’s debut or the Beatles’ early shows, this book offers a fascinating glimpse into the evolution of rock, with energy and innovation on every page. Overall, Craneman's almanac is a valuable resource for music lovers and historians alike.
