Author Biography

I'm a polymath and a retired geology professor from the University of Maine System. I wanted to revive The Sea Witch, because it's always been one of my favorite books. Originally, I'd intended just to transcribe it and publish it, but I soon realized it was, surprisingly, an immature work, so I wound up editing and revising it quite extensively. I'm quite happy with the result. I hope my father is too!

The Sea Witch by Alexander Laing is a historical fiction story that brings the sea to life. The story is based on historical facts about one of history's fastest sailing ships. The ship is an American clipper that does its business in the China tea trade and the California gold rush. The story follows three brothers: the shipmaster and his wife, the first mate, and the carpenter as they sail across the ocean searching for adventure, romance, and fortune. Business rivalries and exciting romance mix with the unforgiving temper of the sea to create a tale full of suspense and action that follows the three brothers through thick and thin, ups and downs, extreme highs and heartbreaking lows. An incredibly well researched historical novel that will appeal to fans of the sea, and fans of a good story alike.

This is a beautifully written historical novel that showcases the beauty of the sea and the shipping industry. It was originally written by Alexander Laing, but his son, author David Bennett Laing, edited the book to make the jargon and historical content more relevant and understandable to the reader. This created the best of both worlds: a beautifully researched and factual piece of work that has been softened and reworked to make it all the more accessible to the reader. The descriptions of the sea and the journeys and voyages of these characters are so beautiful that readers will be enjoying this story for many years to come!
