Dr. Diana Morgan, a conservator, is at the airport to catch a flight to the American Institute of Conservation’s (AIC) Annual Meeting when she spots her former lover, Blake. However, while rushing to greet him, she sees him being abducted and, on trying to intervene, is also taken. Later, they find themselves held separately at a guarded facility. Their captors claim to work for an organization called HXE, Homo Potens Evolved, whose mission is to save the world. They are gathering people with extraordinary abilities, whom they call Homo Potens (HX), to achieve this. They had initially targeted Blake’s twin brother, Lucas, but mistook Blake for him. Diana was never part of their plan. To their surprise, both Blake and Diana are HXs. Soon, the pair learns they are at Windy Ridge State Penitentiary in the Appalachian Mountains and are among the few being held there. With the help of a ten-year-old captive, Blake and Diana plot their escape. Will they succeed? Find out in Looking-Glass Lost by Donna June Cooper.
Looking-Glass Lost by Donna June Cooper is a perfect pick for lovers of romance novels laced with suspense, sci-fi, mystery, drama, psychological thriller, a hint of crime, and plot twists. Cooper introduces fascinating characters. I was drawn in by a dramatic introduction that promised an intriguing, memorable tale, and the storyline didn’t disappoint. Cooper enabled me to connect with the characters and at the same time relish the plot development. Diana and Blake have unresolved history and big secrets, some of which they don’t even know about. They’re about to make shocking discoveries, rekindle their old love, find closure and new family, and trust people they have never met. Cooper weaves dramatic flair into the narration, making the story entertaining. I found Blake’s snarky retorts to his hosts and ten-year-old Addy’s witty ridicule of Blake's and Diana’s habits and shortcomings funny. This page-turner is a great addition to the Books of the Kindling series.
