Siblings Joe and Marie are off on an adventure to see the animals in the second installment of the Secret Club series, The Secret Club Visits the Zoo written by Joseph Cook and with illustrations by Maria Fonseca. They pitch the idea to their parents and the other members of the club, save their allowance and take on extra chores, until three weeks later they are in a car (with their handy little name tags) and on their way. On their arrival, they learn about many different animals and spend a whole day enjoying themselves. At the end of the adventure, Joe and Marie are able to sleep peacefully in the knowledge that they, their friends, and their parents all had a delightful time.

The Secret Club Visits the Zoo by Joseph Cook is a nice little book for parents and teachers looking to impress their young learners with responsibility. The illustrations more than generously balance any editing issues out, as they are really quite colorful and do an excellent job of conveying the spirit of the story. Maria Fonseca is a truly gifted artist in the field of picture books and children's literature, with animals, environment, and people of ambiguous (and wonderfully inclusive) ethnicity being brought to life through her work. If you're looking for a vibrantly depicted bedtime story to hold a child's attention, this is a good book to consider.
