Author Biography

We are Buelo Addaeyah and Afia Henewaa, two storytellers passionate about reclaiming our shared history and reconnecting it with science, culture, and identity. Our journey began with a simple question: What do our genes really say about who we are? That curiosity sparked years of research into DNA, African migration patterns, and the untold stories buried in both scientific data and oral traditions.

As people of African descent, we often saw our past distorted, dismissed, or completely left out of mainstream narratives. We wanted to change that—not just for ourselves, but for our children and future generations who deserve to see themselves in history books with dignity and pride.

The Secret in Our Genes is our answer: a beautifully illustrated, child-friendly introduction to genetics, anthropology, and African history. It invites readers of all ages to explore how science affirms the African origins of humanity and the richness of our ancestral journeys.

We wrote this book to inspire curiosity, spark family conversations, and restore connection—to self, to ancestors, and to the world. Whether you're a parent, teacher, or lifelong learner, we hope this book becomes a meaningful tool in your journey of discovery.

With love,
Buelo Addaeyah & Afia Henewaa

The Secret in Our Genes: Out of Africa and Into the World by Buelo Addaeyah is a profound exploration of heritage and ancestral journeys that transcend geography and time, offering young readers a vivid gateway into the past. This book is not simply a history lesson; it is an ode to the indomitable spirit of the human race, primarily focusing on the African diaspora. Starting with the prehistoric migrations, Addaeyah takes readers on a voyage from the cradles of civilization in Africa across continents, emphasizing the interconnectedness of humanity through genetic and cultural ties. Each chapter explores different epochs and regions, from ancient Egypt and its pharaohs to the Bantu migrations, illustrating African cultures’ diversity, richness, and influence on the world.

The narrative beautifully intertwines personal stories and anecdotes. Buelo Addaeyah’s use of family narratives, especially the stories passed down to him, enriches the factual content, bringing the past to life with emotion and personal connection. One of the most compelling aspects is its focus on resilience and survival. The chapters addressing the slave trade and the subsequent survival and adaptation of African cultures in the diaspora are handled with sensitivity and insight. Addaeyah does not shy away from the pain and brutality of these experiences, but he also highlights the strength and creativity of African peoples in maintaining and reinventing their cultures under unimaginable hardships. The images are outstanding and reflect the beauty and complexity of the story. The Secret in Our Genes is an excellent book for anyone interested in human history’s deep, complex roots and the enduring strength of family bonds through generations. This book is an invaluable addition to personal and educational collections, providing an accurate perspective on the African diaspora and its global impact.
